VPD: 2nd arrest made in February homicide investigation
VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - The Valdosta Police Department (VPD) has arrested and charged another suspect in connection to a February homicide investigation.
On February 11, at around 11: 20 a.m., officers responded to the 500 block of Moody Drive and found Octavius Marshun McDougal, 33, shot. Life-saving measures were attempted on McDougal before Emergency Medical Services responded, transporting him to the hospital.
Per the release, McDougal later died at the hospital.
According to VPD, on Monday, April 1, detectives obtained arrest warrants for Zykenzie Jeremiah Calhoun, 22, of Lakeland for murder during the commission of a felony-felony, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon-felony, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
On Tuesday, April 2, at around 11:00 a.m., detectives made contact with Calhoun in the 1400 block of East Park Avenue.
As they were taking Calhoun into custody, detectives found a firearm, which had an illegal automatic switch on it. He was taken into custody without incident.
Calhoun was transported to Lowndes County Jail where he is being held and further charges are pending.
Chief Leslie Manahan says, “I am extremely proud of the work of our detectives. They worked countless hours, and their hard work has resulted in Mr. McDougal’s family getting answers for this tragic event. We would like to thank the Lakeland Police Department, as well as the Lanier County Sheriff’s Office, for their continuous assistance throughout this investigation.”
