Gwinnett County police arrest woman for firing at school bus
ATLANTA, Ga. (CBS46) - Gwinnett County Police responded to reports of possible shots fired at a school bus Monday morning as it was driving through a Suwanee neighborhood.
“Well you live in a neighborhood for years and years and you never expect something like this to happen outside your front door,” said neighbor Sam DiMercurio.
It happened at around 7:30 a.m. near Johnson Road and Highland Gate Drive in the Highlands at Bridgegate neighborhood.
“No children were injured in this incident and the bus driver suffered from minor injuries from glass break on the bus but nobody was shot,” said Corporal William Wolfe with the Gwinnett County Police Department.
Neighbors say the bus was on its way to Riverside Elementary School. Neighbors say the bus driver went there immediately after the shooting to get the four students on the bus out of harm’s way.
Police say they have arrested a woman for firing multiple shots at the bus. Celeste Michele Saunders was taken into custody following a traffic stop. She is charged with Cruelty to Children in the 1st Degree (4 counts)., Aggravated Assault (5 counts)., Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of Certain Felonies, and Unauthorized Discharge of a Firearm Near Public Street.
“My immediate reaction is who would do something like that,” said DiMercurio.
A mom, who did not want to be named, told CBS46 her five-year-old was on the bus. She says Riverside Elementary officials contacted her and let her come to school to talk to her daughter.
Parents had the option to bring their kids home after the incident but the woman who spoke with CBS46 crews says her daughter wanted to stay in class.
