Head into the new year with boundaries for a healthy mind
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - As 2021 comes to an end, it’s important for you to check in with yourself, reflect on the year you’ve had and focus on how you can improve in the coming years.
Licensed Professional Counselor Sierra Hillsman shared her insight and expertise on how you can accomplish and maintain your new year goals through the year.
Hillsman is an Atlanta-based licensed professional counselor who has served as an expert therapist on Golden Globe-winning actress Taraji P. Henson’s show, “Peace of Mind with Taraji,” which was nominated for a Daytime Emmy. She’s also served as an expert for news outlets across the country including Atlanta, Tampa, Fla., Mobile, Ala. and more.
Hillsman said when talking about goal setting for the new year, it’s important for you to incorporate your whole being, instead of just focusing on the mental and emotional aspects of yourself.
She encourages people to set realistic and time-oriented goals. Doing so makes it easier for you to be able to measure your progress throughout the year.
“Sometimes, we find individuals slapping toxic positivity on top of their negative thoughts. And so I want to remind people that it’s important to acknowledge what you’re feeling in the moment. Please don’t just push it away but understand that your feelings are valid, but you don’t have to be consumed by them,” Hillsman said.
Hillsman said it’s okay for you to take breaks in the midst of you accomplishing your new year goals. She also said you shouldn’t feel bad about doing this.
As the year comes to an end, remember to focus on the positive and put more energy into making your new goals into successes.
