Investigation underway after dead dogs discovered on Tybee Island
TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WTOC) - An investigation is underway after two dead dogs were recently discovered on Tybee Island.
According to the Tybee Island Police Department, officers responded to the 10th Street Beach crossover area on May 29 in reference to a dead dog in a trash bag and discovered that an animal had been tied up in the bag and discarded in the dune area. The next day, police responded to the welcome sign at Highway 80 and Old Highway 80 in reference to a report of another dead dog. They say this one was found inside of a storage tote that had been left on the side of the road.
“It’s certainly no secret that here on Tybee we take animal welfare very seriously. We have programs like K-9 for a day where we attempt to get shelter dogs adopted so this is something that strikes pretty close to our heart. And I am not going to speculate on the current status of the investigation, but I will say that our detectives are taking it seriously and they are looking into it,” said Lt. Emory Randolph with the Tybee Island Police Department.
The Tybee Island Police Department says it takes animal welfare very seriously and this remains an ongoing investigation.
Police say they haven’t gotten reports of any missing animals, but are still working to identify the cause of death and breeds. They are unsure if these two incidents are connected, but are working to learn more.
“What we’re going to ask people to do is if they have any surveillance footage, ring doorbell footage especially in the area of 10th street and beachside on or around Saturday, May 29, 2021, if you see anything suspicious, anybody carrying a trash bag down the street headed towards the beach, we’d like to know about that. Please come forward.”
