GBI: 2, including deputy, injured in Eldorado officer-involved shooting
ELDORADO, Ga. (WALB) - The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is investigating after two people, including a deputy, were injured in an officer-involved shooting in Tift County.
According to a post on Twitter by the GBI, a deputy and a man were both shot and are in serious condition.
The GBI said Tift County deputies responded to a 911 call about a disturbance by two men in an Eldorado neighborhood. In a press release, the GBI said the men were reportedly knocking on multiple doors.
The deputies found the men and tried to identify them, the release states. The GBI reported that during the incident, one of the men fired shots, striking a deputy multiple times and another deputy fired back, hitting the man.
According to the Twitter post, the second man in the incident has been taken into custody, WALB is working to get his identity.
The incident happened Friday morning in Eldorado, which is between Tifton and Lenox.
Neighbors who drove through the area told WALB News 10 that they saw commotion as early as 7:30 Friday morning.
A woman in the neighborhood, who didn’t want to go on camera, said the deputy that was shot is her nephew. She told WALB that she was looking outside her window and saw everything unfold. She said everything appeared to be fine until one of the men began to shoot.
She said her nephew, the deputy, was shot three times with wounds to his hand, underarm and left hip.
The press release states that the GBI will continue to conduct an independent investigation. Once the investigation is complete, it will be submitted to the Tift County District Attorney’s Office for review.
This is the 36th officer-involved shooting that the GBI has been requested to investigate in 2021.
