ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. (WALB) - The Peach Belt Conference Championship is on the line this weekend for Georgia Southwestern golf.
On Friday, the men are hitting the links for a few more swings before the tournament starts.
The 11th ranked Hurricanes will tee off Friday for the conference championship in Saint Augustine, Florida. A course they haven’t played on in over two years, so Thursday’s practice round is crucial.
The uncertainty of a 2021 season led to a slow start for the Canes. Now, at the best time, they’re hitting their stride.
Chase McLain, who will be one of the five golfers representing GSW this weekend, was just named Golfer of the Week after their latest invitational. Teammate Saksit Jairak recently earned Peach Belt All-Conference honors. Currently, he has the 8th-lowest scoring average in the PBC
Darcy Donaldson, the 2020 conference coach of the year is confident their experience will keep them competitive this weekend.
The Canes said they are ready for the opportunity to compete after missing last year due to the pandemic.
”It’s exciting to get on the road and get your game faces on and you have fun at the right time. And yeah, we’re definitely excited. It’s a typical Florida course, there’s a lot of water, there’s a lot of trouble. It’s about our game film getting us ready with yardage books and the experience we have. I’ve been there a couple of years now and kind of getting them ready. But it’s golf and it’s different every day, it’s about getting the good things and the bad things,” said Donaldson.
The Hurricanes placed 5th in the 2019 conference championship.
Nine teams will tee off, starting at 8 a.m. on Friday. Also on the line this weekend, an automatic berth to the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regional.
