ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - After years of construction and improvements, the Black Horse Speedway in Albany is set to hold its grand opening this weekend.
The COVID-19 pandemic delaying this moment by a year. Kenneth Thomas, Race Director at Black Horse, told us this track has brought joy and entertainment to South Georgia for many years.
Just days away from the opening and they’re excited for fans and competitors to return to their racetrack.
”I’ve been coming here since I was about 12 years old and the last owner, I worked with him for five years before I went out on my own. And he ended up selling me this place. It’s kind of always been sentimental to me. You know, the bull ring is special to a lot of people and we’re going to see if we can reunite them again,” said Thomas.
Thomas added, “COVID shut us down last year and we couldn’t get it where we wanted to be, and we got a little aggravated and now we’ve come back with some excitement and we’ve got everything right. The racetrack is perfect, the facility is where it needs to be and we’re excited. Ran or shine, we’re racing and we hope everybody comes out.”
The track opens up at 7:00 p.m.. for the first race on April 17.
