2 arrested after attempting to flee during traffic stop

CORDELE, Ga. (WALB) - Two people were arrested Thursday after deputies found narcotics while the suspects attempted to elude law enforcement, according to the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said that around 10 a.m., they attempted to stop a silver Chevrolet Impala near the intersection of 24th Avenue West and 15th Street South for a window tint violation.

The driver failed to stop and began to drive recklessly to elude officers, according to a release.

The car stopped in the 300 block of 20th Avenue after a deputy performed a PIT maneuver.

James Collins, 39, was taken into custody. The sheriff’s office said Kimberly Phillips, 44, ran from the vehicle and was arrested after a brief foot chase.

After searching the vehicle, deputies said they found pill bottles and small bags containing suspected hydrocodone and oxymorphone pills.

Collins is being charged with:

  • Sale, distribution or possession of dangerous drugs
  • Possession of a schedule I or II controlled substance
  • Possession of a schedule I or II controlled substance
  • Fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer
  • Failure to obey a stop sign
  • Failure to maintain lane
  • Reckless driving
  • Prescription drugs must be in their original container

Phillips is being charged with obstruction or hindering law enforcement officers.

Both were taken to the Crisp County Detention Center.
