Americus man charged with murder after fatal shooting

AMERICUS, Ga. (WALB) - One man is behind bars and another is dead after a shooting Sunday, according to the Americus Polie Department.

It happened around 1 a.m. Police and medical personnel were dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of South Dudley in reference to a gunshot victim.

When they arrived, police said Marcus Laster, 26, had been shot in the upper body.

Laster was taken to Phoebe Sumter Medical Center where he died from his injuries.

After an investigation, Deshun Washington, 27, was arrested around 1:50 a.m. in the area of Lakeview Circle.

Washington is being held in the Sumter County Jail and is being charged with:

  • Murder
  • Aggravated assault
  • Possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony
  • Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
  • Tampering with evidence

Washington is also facing charges of entering auto and obstruction of a police officer related to warrants issued on Jan. 6 in an unrelated incident.
