2 arrested after Valdosta shooting turns into car wreck

VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - Two people are in the Lowndes County Jail after a shooting Thursday, according to the Valdosta Police Department.

It happened around noon in the 900 block of East Cranford Avenue.

Police said they responded to a call regarding a hit and run that turned into a dispute.

A police report said that when the first officer arrived on the scene and attempted to get information from witnesses, Sherman Cowart walked up and began to try to attack the people the officer was talking with.

When the officer tried to stop Cowart, he pushed the officer out of the way, according to a report.

When more officers arrived on the scene, they said they learned that a man had been shot in the foot while at a residence on the 1700 block of Largo Circle. The victim was also on the scene at the incident on East Canford Avenue. From there, he was taken to South Georgia Medical Center for treatment and has been released.

Police said the victim was arguing with his brother at the residence on Largo Circle. During the argument, Tyronda Walker pulled out a handgun, shooting the man in the foot.

Then Walker and another person left the scene in their vehicle. The victim then followed then in his vehicle to the residence on East Cranford Avenue.

While driving to East Cranford Avenue, it was reported that a traffic accident had happened between the two vehicles.

Cowart was arrested for disorderly conduct and obstruction of an officer.

Walker was arrested for aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Police said the shooting incident and the traffic accident are still under investigation and further charges are pending.
