CAIRO, Ga. (WALB) - The City of Cairo is working to bring a more vibrant downtown to the community.

Cairo Mayor Howard Thrower said they want to create a unique place that represents all of Grady County.

Thrower said they came together for the first of two charrettes on Monday, which is when everyone comes together to plan for something like the future of downtown.

While he wasn’t able to give much information after their Monday meeting, they were able to sit down with a design team, Lew Oliver Inc., out of Atlanta. Their team is in Cairo this week to help the city’s vision of downtown come to life.

Thrower said they’ve invited certain members of the community to the session, so they can figure out how to design, brand and market.

When the mayor announced the plan in September, business owners WALB spoke with were excited.

With COVID-19 hitting downtown hard, owners hope this will bring more life to the area.

After Monday’s meeting, they’ll have their second and last meeting on Thursday.

The design team will then give a presentation of what they’ve come up with for the area.
