Postal worker captured on video throwing package
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Video at one Highland Lakes home captured a postal worker stopping at the steps of a home and then tossing the package onto the porch.
The homeowner says you can hear it hitting the door or ground.
Luckily, this time nothing inside was broken. But what happens if something was? Who ultimately is responsible for it?
Here’s what one expert told us:
“If the driver throws the package and it is caught on video, then it depends on the force and circumstances as to if FedEx or UPS will honor a damage claim. All packages have a free declared value up to $99 automatically. So damaged items are covered up to that $99 rate unless declared to be more valuable. But the packages must have sufficient packaging to begin with. The shipper or receiver can start the damage claim online. The receiver should take photos and be aware that a carrier representative could request to inspect the item and packaging. As a sender, they should provide the carrier with documentation on the replacement or repair costs. Documentation includes original invoices or purchase orders. Pictures of the damage and condition of the packaging are great to have,” said Brian Gibbs, president of Refund Retriever.
