VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - City officials are in the beginning stages of a plan to expand a major street that runs through the center of Valdosta.
That widening consists of about a 2.5 mile stretch of all of Jerry Jones Drive and Eager Road.
It would include an added center, turning lane starting at Baytree Road and Jerry Jones Drive and continuing until Eager Road and North Oak Street.
On Wednesday evening, the council approved a contract for an additional $1 million dollars from G-DOT.
This money would go towards the purchasing of the easement from residents on Jerry Jones Road/Eager Road, necessary for the road expansions.
Because of this, Ashlyn Johnson with the city said the road widening construction is not expected to start until December of 2022.
“It’s not even close to getting started yet, just because that right of way has to be purchased and that’s a long stretch of road. It’ll take some time," said Johnson.
Johnson said that those who may be affected will be contacted by the city for talks of acquisition.
The right of way purchase is expected to cost up to $3 million dollars from the city, while GDOT is expected to pay about $13 million for construction.
She said they hope the project will ease some of the congestion on this busy road during peak times.
