VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - It’s official -- Valdosta has a new mayor.
Scott James Matheson was named the victor over J.D. Rice by just 96 votes.
The countdown to the final vote was an emotional one for both candidates.
Both candidates and a number of their supporters gathered at the board of elections to hear the results.
The board found that only 88 of the 130 provisional ballots were able to be verified.
Emotions ran high at the Board of Elections.
Many supporters of the opponent, J.D. Rice, were confused about why some of these votes were not a part of the final count.
Supervisors of Elections, Deb Cox, shared that the issues were typical when it comes to provisional ballots.
Some voters were not registered, some voted twice, others live in the county and were not eligible to vote in this election.
One person who was sure his vote counted though -- Mayor-Elect Scott James Matheson.
He shared that he is excited to take over the reigns and ready to get started.
