DOUGHERTY CO., Ga. (WALB) - Dougherty County Coroner Michael Flower has identified the woman that was killed during a two-car wreck in the 2300 block of Moultrie Road Wednesday afternoon.
Maria Concepcion Cruz Rodriquez, 36, of Moultrie, was ejected from her car and pronounced dead on the scene.
The first vehicle side-swiped Rodriquez’s car, which caused her to go off the road, according to Dougherty County Police (DCP).
Rodriquez’s car flipped several times and went into a ditch next to a phone pole.
Two other people were in the vehicle with Rodriquez.
A man and a child were taken to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, DCP officials said.
Traffic was rerouted at the time of the accident.
Dougherty police said the accident happened between Honeysuckle and Gravel Hill roads.
Vehicular homicide and failure to maintain lane charges are pending, according to police.
DCP said the driver that swerved into Rodriquez’s lane admitted to falling asleep at the wheel.
Authorities are warning drivers about the consequences of distracted driving.
“Please stay off your cell phones. If you’re tired, pull over, get some sleep. It’s just not worth it killing somebody or permanently injuring somebody. It’s a terrible thing and it can be avoided,” said DCP Lieutenant David McVey.
McVey said while this wreck, unfortunately, killed one person, he said it was fortunate only one other vehicle was hit.
He said if it had happened on another major road, it could have been a multiple vehicle accident.
