MITCHELL CO., Ga. (WALB) - A high speed chase turned deadly Wednesday morning, according to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP).
One person died in the incident, which happened on State Route 65.
Troopers said they are still notifying family members.
WALB is working to confirm the victim’s identity and more details about the crash.
The crash happened Wednesday around mile marker six on State Route 65.
That’s about 15 minutes outside of the Pelham city limits, not far from Quail Crossing Road.
Georgia State Patrol Trooper, Frank Gay, said their official report has not been filed, yet.
But they do know the Mitchell County Sheriff's Office initiated the chase.
The car they were after did crash, and one person died.
Gay said that person has not been positively identified.
“We heard sirens, but we didn’t know it was a chase, a police chase. We were just like it was an ambulance or a fire truck,” said Rufus Lewis.
Lewis was in the downtown Pelham area, when he said he and his friend heard the chase from afar.
He said they didn’t know what it was at first.
WALB News 10 has reached out to the Sheriff’s Office for more answers, as well.
This is a developing story and we will update as more information becomes available.
