TIFTON, Ga. (WALB) - Construction at a major intersection in Tift County is causing traffic delays and detours.
The Georgia Department of Transportation’s (GDOT) road improvement project at Southwell Boulevard and US Highway 41 has caused traffic backups and detours.
GDOT wants drivers to know that all lanes on Southwell Boulevard are currently open but you can’t go further than where the highway meets the road.
Because of the construction, drivers are having to take alternate routes.
GDOT Southwest officials said the repairs are long overdue. They are replacing asphalt from the street for concrete.
They said concrete holds up better for the many trucks coming and going onto the freeway.
This intersection is a busy area, not just for truck drivers but for tourists coming and going through Tifton and anyone needing to get to the businesses off of Highway 41.
The construction workers are moving as quickly as possible but the weather will also be a determining factor for completion.
GDOT officials said the construction can take weeks. They are asking drivers to use caution when coming through the work zone.
