Kemp makes history with newly appointed insurance commissioner

ATLANTA, Ga. (WALB) - Gov. Brian Kemp made history Wednesday by appointing the first ever Hispanic Insurance Commissioner and statewide constitutional officer.

Doraville Police Chief and Brigadier General John King will replace Jim Beck who was indicted last month on fraud and money laundering charges and also suspended by Kemp.

“As Georgia’s next Insurance Commissioner and Safety Fire Official, John will put hardworking Georgians first by shaking up the status quo. He will restore faith in the Department of Insurance and will always do the right thing – even when no one is looking. Chief King has once again answered the call for public service. I know he will continue to be a bold leader and champion for the people.”
Governor Brian Kemp

King is a native of Mexico and has worked in law enforcement at the Atlanta Police Department for over three decades.
