TIFTON, Ga. (WALB) - One fire department has a new set of firefighters in town.
The Tifton Fire Department (TFD) has welcomed its largest recruit class ever.
Recruits began learning and training in the middle of January and graduated last month.
The majority of the 12 students who graduated the program last month are enrolled at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.
TFD training officer, Bryan Altman, said many of the firefighters have been hired on full time, others will work part time.
“Every one of them have done an outstanding job. Very proud of the individuals that come through,” explained Altman, “They’re all young, helping us, with our operations here at the fire department. Help make us better as far as man power and to beef up our volunteer list.”
Two of the new recruits are women, adding to another female firefighter who already worked at the station.
Samantha Diaz has been a firefighter at TFD for almost a year.
“This department has been very accepting of the three of us. And it just makes me look forward to the future to see just how many more females we can encourage and empower to become firefighters,” explained Diaz.
She said she is excited to change the stigma surrounding women as firefighters.
