VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - The Valdosta Boys & Girls Club plans to host an event, honoring first responders and raise funds for kids in the area.
“Last year was great. We’re looking forward to this year. It’s going to be that much more exciting," said Lowndes Fire Marshal, Lloyd Green.
Lloyd Green works for the Lowndes County Fire Department and is just one of first responders coming to participate in the Great American Cook-Off. In which, first responder agencies will compete against one another, selling plates to the community to raise money.
“It’s great. Anytime we can help our youth move forward, move up, it’s a great thing. By raising money, it’s even better," said Green.
Valdosta Boys & Girls Club hopes to raise money for the children in the program to get outdoor equipment.
Not only will the winner take home a Big Green Egg Grill, but they’ll also take home the title of the Great American Cook-Off Grillmaster.
“We will have a great time. So we encourage the public to come out to support your local Boys & Girls Club so the kids can have an answer time with the equipment that they need during the summer," said Cathy Parker, Vice President of Boys and Girls Club Marketing.
Last year, the group raised over $10,000 with the grilling competition and this year they’re hoping to top that while having fun and honoring first responders.
“We want our children to see our law enforcement, our emergency rescue—we want them to see them in a great light," said Parker.
To support, you can come out give a donation, buy a barbecue plate, or participate in the raffle.
The Great American Cook-Off is Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Season’s Miller Hardware in Valdosta.
