FITZGERALD, GA (WALB) -Georgia’s film industry is booming and it’s happening right here in our backyards.
“My passion’s more about helping other people and trying to build something not just, it’s actually fairly easy goal just to become a famous actor, it’s much harder to revitalize a small town," Alexander Kane is a local actor who is helping drive Fitzgerald’s film industry. "So that’s what I’m more interested in is the big picture.”
Kane’s passion has helped bring productions to Fitzgerald.
One current project is a TV series called “The Encounter”, leading to several Fitzgerald residents being hired to work on the show.
City leaders say Fitzgerald’s film industry is making huge footprints in the local economy.
“When you’ve got 27 people who are from outside of the community, they are staying at our hotels and our Airbnbs and they’re going to restaurants," said Fitzgerald’s tourism, arts and culture director, Brandy Elrod.
"At night after they finish, most of the time they put in 12 hour days and so at the end of the day, they are looking for somewhere to eat that’s really good,” Elrod added.
She says not only are they welcoming outside talent but they’re also growing the hometown talent.
“We’re trying to create a sustainable industry and basically what that’s going to require is us to do training locally, on the local level and so we’re working with our high school to develop programs that trains, hands-on training for the various parts of the film industry.”
“We’ve got some very big projects coming. Some with very well-known actors, big time celebrities they’re names out there that you’d know that have been a staple throughout the film industry for a very long time" says Kane.
"I’ll just put it in the genre of the Bruce Willis and the Mel Gibsons and the Clint Eastwoods, those levels of actors we do have lined up to come here to shoot films,“ Kane adds.
Kane says many of those projects will kick off soon.
