SYLVESTER, GA (WALB) - One Southwest Georgia community is responding well to its newest addition to downtown.
After nearly 10 years of planning and help from a transportation grant, the pedestrian mall in Sylvester is just about complete.
The last part of the project will be to resurface the parking lot next to it.
The city has held three events there so far and public works officials said they are looking forward to more.
“They love it," Charlie Williams, public works superintendent, said. “It’s something new, a better place to gather. It’s wonderful. Downtown, the movies, the events, they love it.”
Williams said they hope to finish resurfacing the parking lot hopefully by the middle of summer.
Sylvester leaders said they are also looking forward to moving back into city hall once its remodeling is completed
The project manager said the remodel is 98 percent complete.
Manager James Barker said the current work is redoing some of the stone work and finishing up the cleaning.
The next steps are in the city leaders hands, to do a walk through in two weeks.
“They’ll do a final clean up and everything will be ready to put the furniture in and once the city does a formal walk through and accepts the billing then they’ll sign it over to us and it’ll be a completed job,” Barker said.
Barker said he’s confident city hall will be open by June, if not the first part of July.
