Panthers Boys Tennis is set to make history

Reached Sweet 16 for first time since 2012, and took down Howard to reach Elite 8

Americus-Sumter is moving on to the Elite Eight

AMERICUS, GA (WALB) - The Americus-Sumter Tennis team has a long history of success.

But as the Panthers hosted the Sweet 16 round yesterday, Americus-Sumter looked to get one step closer to their first team state title.

Americus-Sumter advanced to the Elite Eight, after taking a 3-1 victory over Howard.

Back in 2012, the boys tennis team actually fell to Howard 3-1 in the Sweet 16.

Now having the opportunity to inch closer to that state title, the Panthers seem ready for the challenge.

“Well there’s just no doubt about it," said head tennis coach Carl Willis. "These kids have really played hard. I only lose three of them. We’re a young team actually. We’ve got some young kids that aren’t actually playing today. They watch so they can learn. Today is not a business trip. We just at business at home today. So, I’m trying to teach them how we do things and how we conduct ourselves.”

The Panthers have made the playoffs 6 out of the last 7 years.

Americus will await the coin toss to see who will host the Elite Eight.

They will face Marist.
