AMERICUS, GA (WALB) - The Americus Fire and Emergency Services held its 24th Annual Golf Tournament Friday and officials said it was a huge success.

The event was held at the Georgia Southwestern State University Griffin Bell Golf Links with 35 three-person teams, a total of 105 golfers.

“It’s a good way for us to get out and socialize with members of the community. They realize and see what we’re going to do with the proceeds. It’s just a fun, fun time for everybody,” said Fire Chief Roger Bivins.

The first place winners were Parker’s Heating & A/C for Flight A and Cody Brown for Flight B.

Overall, the tournament raised $13,306 compared to 2018′s $11,867.

All funds raised will go towards promoting fire education and prevention programs in the city.

One of the projects is modernizing the department’s mobile fire safety house.

The annual golf tournament started in 1996 under Fire Chief Steven Moreno as he was inspired by golfing tournaments being held in neighboring cities.

“The support from the community was outstanding and we, as a department are truly appreciative. We are so thankful to have a community that supports our department like Americus,” said Bivins.
