DOUGHERTY CO., GA (WALB) - For the first time ever, the Dougherty County Republican party has a black chairman.
Tracy Taylor was appointed chairman Feb. 9.
Taylor has run for number of local and state positions before including: Dougherty County commissioner in 2013, mayor of Albany in 2015 and a state representative seat in 2018.
His goal, Taylor pointed out, is to make sure that people are aware there is a conservative voice here that is concerned with issues like racial divisiveness and poverty that plague the community.
“It just shows the South is turning, the party is not consistent on old quote on quote ‘white man,’ but it’s very diverse. We have an LGBT community, African American men and women children and so on," Taylor said.
