AMERICUS, GA (WALB) - Americus-Sumter has the toughest road to a state title, but they're one step closer.
The panthers knocked off 2-time defending state champs Upson-Lee Thursday night on the road.
Next week, all they have to do is beat St. Pius, the 2-time state runners up on the road once again.
It gets no easier for the Panthers who are gearing up for the quad-A elite 8.
Last night they shocked the state taking down the Number 1 team in the class 59-53 on the road.
Americus-Sumter was the underdog to everyone in Georgia that wasn't practicing in the Panther Den.
It didn't matter.
Head coach Michael Hoffpauir was honest in his celebration of the milestone win.
“This is the longest I’ve ever rode the high of a victory. Normally the next morning, next game up, I’m going. But it’s been a great victory for the program and for the community," said Hoffpauir at Friday’s practice
“I don’t really put it like as an underdog, because we came into the game knowing that we were going to win. It was a very hostile environment, we just has to come to play," said senior Joshua Lusane.
They play at St. Pius on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
