CALHOUN COUNTY, GA (WALB) - The Calhoun County Cougars were on a tear this regular season.
Both the boys and girls basketball teams are heading into the playoffs with a bye for the first round, after clinching the region title together for the first time, since 2000.
For the boys, it was a story book year to the regular season.
A perfect unblemished record at 28-0, the first undefeated record in basketball history.
The title comes as number three in a row for the Cougars.
As Calhoun County has proven themselves as one of the best in region 1 single A.
Now the Cougars get the chance to rest the first week with a bye, and shift their focus towards the state playoffs.
“Right it does. Any time, at this point in the season,"said head boys basketball coach Marcus Shaw, "you’re able to get your kids some rest is definitely a great thing. 25 game season, plus the region tournament, and we’ve been playing for quite some time now. Any time you get to rest your kids up is definitely a plus.”
The Cougars are waiting to see who they will play in the second round.
It’s between Drew Charter and Georgia Military.
The Lady Cougars are looking to add yet another banner to the gym's wall.
After taking the region title, the Cougars will be looking to take home the state title for the first time.
The farthest the team has made it was in 2005 when they reached the Final Four.
Calhoun County finished the season at 26-2, and remained undefeated in the region.
The Lady Cougars agreed as a team to that they would focus on the next game, and not take part in interviews until the season was over.
Calhoun County will await the result of Lanier County and Towns County, to see who they will face in the second round.
