PELHAM, GA (WALB) - After more than 10 years of being vacant, an iconic building in Pelham will be revitalized.
The Hand Trading Building, which sits on the corner of downtown Pelham, will soon house retail stores and residential living.
IDP Properties is investing $12 million dollars to redevelop this site.
The new owners hope to have construction done by the beginning of 2020.
Rhett Holmes, IPD President, said the community will benefit greatly.
“It’s just an incredibly cool building in a small town in rural Georgia, that just so desperately needs some additional economic development," said Holmes.
He said it will function like affordable housing, which mirrors the needs of the community.
This site used to be all commercial space, which is something Holmes still wants to incorporate.
“We hope to either get one to three retail tenants in here to participate in the mixed use. To work with not only the community, and City of Pelham, but also with the 54 residents that will be living here in this building," said Holmes.
Before they get too far into construction, he tells me he wants to hold a town hall meeting with people in the area.
“We want to make sure that the community knows they’re a part of this redevelopment," said Holmes.
With so much history inside this building, they want to make sure they create something that will succeed in Pelham.
“We want them to have input, but also knowledge of what we’re doing, how they can interact with us, and how this building will influence downtown," said Holmes
He told WALB they’re working to schedule a meeting in the coming weeks.
A few residents told us they’re beyond excited for this new project to be complete so new life can come to Pelham.
