GA Dept. of Corrections investigates inmate death at Calhoun State Prison

MORGAN, GA (WALB) - The Georgia Department of Corrections (DOC) is investigating an inmate death at Calhoun State Prison as a suspected suicide.

According to a press release from the DOC, Raymond Nelson, 50, was found unresponsive in his cell Monday around 4:40 a.m.

The release said emergency medical services were called and Nelson was pronounced dead at the scene around 7:45 a.m.

The DOC said it is conducting an investigation into Nelson’s death as part of standard procedure.

Nelson was sentenced in 2011 in Whitfield County for the charge of sex offender fail to register, according to DOC records.
