ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Ball players across the South Georgia are preparing to play in next week’s MLK Basketball Classic.
“Playing against a good team, playing hard and getting a dub," said Deerfield-Windsor sophomore guard Shamir Wingfiled.
The one day classic put on by Albany Elite Sports and Dougherty County Schools will be packed with excitement.
They’ll have halftime entertainment, a live DJ and 4 highly anticipated games.
Play will begin on Martin Luther king day at noon on Albany State East campus.
The aim of this classic is to help some of the top prospects from the area.
That’s how organizer EJ brown picked the 8 schools that will take the court at HPER gym.
“We’ve got a lot of great players,” said Brown with Albany elite Sports.
“Some underclassmen as well as some guys from the Class of 2019 that are on the radar for scouts, so a lot of scouts are excited. We’re going to have 20 to 25 coaches in the building.”
He didn’t have to do much convincing when looking for teams to fill the gym.
“It’s an easy sell," said Deerfield-Windsor boy’s basketball coach Bill Cefaratti.
"Our guys need the exposure and they want to play against better competition anyways. So any time we can get non-region play that has that type of talent we’ll be there.”
