VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - The federal government is attempting to get an idea of the state of homelessness across the country.
According to city officials, they come out to some very specific areas to take a survey of the homeless.
The government regularly asks for these counts and this year the counting will go a little different.
Officials are going to be surveying the individuals with a new program that will speed up the process.
The city workers will be going out to do an assessment of these individuals state of living at the time.
We spoke to the Vanassa Flucas, Neighborhood Development Director, who shared that this may not get an accurate read of the homeless population.
“We kind of know in the back of our head the people, where they live, where the encampments are, the number—any given time during the year. Most of the time, our numbers that we take for point in time, don’t reflect those numbers," said Flucas.
The count does not include those who may be homeless but are given the opportunity to maybe stay in a car or with a friend.
That count is set to take place Monday night.
