Georgia Search and Rescue members go through training

Search and Rescue Training

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - Dozens of members of fire departments from across South Georgia are coming together to brush up on the skills to continue keeping us all safe.

All week, the Georgia Search and Rescue, or G-SAR, Task Force 2 team is doing a structural collapse training in Valdosta.

The team includes firefighters from Thomas County, Lowndes County, Tift County, and more.

We spoke to the Special Operation Captain, Jeff Thibodeau, who shared that these are very technical and dangerous skills that require regular practice.

“We have to continue honing our skills, getting better. One of the biggest things is that when we train together, we become more as a unified team, so things go much more smoothly and plus we don’t forget the stuff that we’ve learned," said Special Operation Captain, Jeff Thibodeau.

Thibodeau says that they do four trainings every year, which is important considering how busy they have been.

He says over the past three years, they have at their busiest since being in Valdosta.

Thibodeau says that they have covered multiple natural disasters including the hurricanes and tornadoes.
