COOK CO., GA (WALB) - We now know the charges a woman is facing who rented a trailer where law enforcement found dozens of dead and neglected animals.
According to the Cook County Sheriff’s Department, Marie Merritt, 55, is being charged with 13 counts of animal cruelty.
One animal rescue official who was called to the scene after law enforcement began investigating said that they found over 80 animals in Merritt’s possession and more than half of them were deceased.
These animals included cats, dogs, pigs, birds and rabbits, all of which were kept in crates and boxes.
Reportedly, one crate had four puppies, alive, that they suspect only survived by feeding on their dead sibling.
Some neighbors said they did not know what was going on, but they had complained about the condition of the house many times.
The neighbors also said that the yard was neglected and filled with trash and clutter.
One neighbor even said that the dead animals on the property explain the horrible smell radiating from the area in the summer months.
