Valdosta school system hosts topping off ceremony

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - Valdosta City Schools is celebrating the placement of its last beam of the brand new, $4 million STEM Academy.

The school system hosted a topping off ceremony for its Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) building.

The facility was built right behind Valdosta Middle School and offers students a unique learning opportunity.

“Students learn better if they are doing. This facility allows them that opportunity to do more with their hands, be more minds on. We appreciate the contractors, architects and the staff here at Valdosta Middle School for providing those opportunities for kids to be more hands-on and more minds-on in their learning process," said William Todd Cason, the superintendent of Valdosta City Schools.

The school system used the construction as an educational opportunity for students to see what all comes with putting up a new building.

Students got the chance for some hands-on experience in construction, engineering, mechanics and more.

The new building is set to open before the end of the 2019-2020 school year.
