AMERICUS, GA (WALB) - The Americus-Sumter Panthers are getting ready to play their first game of the new year this coming Tuesday.
They look to make yet another playoff run this year, hoping this time, they’ll have to make a little room in the trophy case.
The Panthers aren't too far off that track... sitting at a very comfortable 12-1 record this season... and holding the number two spot in the region with a 5-1 record.
Americus-Sumter showed what they were made of this past week in the Lee County Roundball Classic, taking home the trophy, and even defeating region leader, Carver Columbus 80-54.
Head coach Michael Hoffpauir said this team knows what’s at stake and knows what needs to be done to make a state title run.
“This team here is a lot more conscious about the seriousness of the situation," said Hoffpauir. "They know about the details, the fine details of the game are very important. They kind of have that motivation from the way that the season ended last year. Because we had high expectations last year and the way the season ended, we kind of want to improve upon that.”
The Panthers open 2019 on the road in Columbus against Northside.
