MOULTRIE , GA (WALB) - Crime and trash seemed to be taking over a Northwest Moultrie neighborhood, but neighbors and the city are changing that.

The city sponsored a Beautification Contest.

Since August, eight houses have been either razed or boarded up.

They've also worked to clean up illegal dumping sites, and paint more than 200 fire hydrants.

Marie Marks won first place for the improvements she made to her home and yard.

I've noticed a change not just on my street but throughout northwest Moultrie, and I'm beginning to smile again. I'm glad to go outside and see the beautiful yards and homes, and it's getting better,"said Marie Marks, Homeowner.

Marks received $1,000, she says the money will go to make other improvements to her home and yard.

The city of Moultrie plans to spread the initiative to other areas in the future.
