VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - Reed Bingham believes they've dug up a new state record.

They uncovered this female mud snake. When stretched out, it's six feet seven inches long.

The snake was brought in to park rangers.

They now hope to keep it for educational programs because they say finding another mud snake is no easy job.

The snakes burrow in the mud and are seldom seen or captured.

"I've only seen two. It's not that they are rare, they are just hard to find. The two I've seen were dead. They were not even half her size," says Interpretive Ranger Jennifer Glover.

The Rangers will monitor the eggs and once hatched will release them on park property.
