ViewPoint: Charity does begin at home

On a recent mission trip, the youth ministry of Albany's St. Teresa's Catholic Church chose to lend a helping hand, not in Mexico, Canada, Jamaica or the Philippines. Instead, more than two dozen young people, including young people from St. Mary's, Georgia, headed to Anderson, Indiana.

The teen ministry worked in conjunction with the HEART Camp which stands for Helping Everyone Achieve Repairs Today.

They even raised more than $27,000 for the trip which, by the way, was their 12th. This was definitely NOT a vacation. The teens' mission was to help the residents of Anderson repair their homes or assist public agencies in fixing up their businesses.

This area was hit hard years ago when several large industries shut down. As the group's director stated, "This mission trip is about these kids learning how to deal with real world the way Jesus taught us." So when asked "what did you do this summer?"

These young people can say "We demonstrated that charity begins at home."
