Max R. Lewis, 86, of West Dougherty, died Saturday, July 4, 2009 at Palmyra Medical Centers.
His funeral service will be TUESDAY 2 PM at Central Baptist Church with interment to follow at Crown Hill Cemetery. The Revs. Olin C. Johnson and Johan Van Der Merwe will officiate.
A native and lifelong resident of West Dougherty where he farmed and raised cattle, Mr. Lewis was a Charter Member of Central Baptist Church and served as a deacon. He was a graduate of the Albany High School in the class of 1940, was an Army Air Corps veteran of WWII. Mr. Lewis served on the Mitchell EMC Board from 1976 for 25 years until 2005. He was past chairman of the board of Riverview Academy, served on the ASCS committee, and was named man of the year for the Flint River Soil and Water Conservation District. He was a member of the Rafter Rockers Square Dancing Club and a lifelong member of the West Dougherty Community House. Mr. Lewis was preceded in death by his wife, Annette Allen Lewis and a brother, Don Lewis.
Survivors include 3 sons: Buddy Lewis and his wife Vicki, West Dougherty, Roy Lewis and his wife Nancy, Atlanta, Jim Lewis and his wife Cristi, Albany; a daughter: Anne L. Pate and her husband Harvey, Albany; 10 grandchildren: Kelley Morton, Shane Bowyer and wife Tonie, Krissy Medlin and husband Josh, Max R. Lewis, III, Kelsay Lewis, Allie Lewis, Taylor Lewis, Jonathan Lewis, Laura Pate, Trey Pate; 6 great-grandchildren: Everett Morton, Annabelle Morton, Skylar Medlin, Roth Medlin, Asher Medlin, Ireanna Medlin; 2 sisters: Evelyn Paschal, West Dougherty, Harriet Cannady and her husband Dan, Allendale, SC.
The family will receive friends at Kimbrell-Stern on Monday from 6-8 PM.
