ViewPoint: Smoke in the workplace

Three years ago, the Smokefree Air Act went into effect in Georgia.

It protects Georgians from secondhand smoke in most enclosed, indoor public areas and all government owned and operated businesses.

We commend the state for adopting this law, but now we'd like to see it toughened.

We believe that smoking should be banned at all businesses in Georgia if more than one person is employed there.

The current law makes exceptions for private businesses that aren't open to the general public.

But what about the people who work there? We believe they should be afforded the same protection as members of the public.

Many private businesses, including WALB-TV, have voluntarily banned smoking and instead provide outdoor smoking areas for employees.

With an abundance of evidence that secondhand smoke is deadly, we think it's time that every Georgian be protected regardless of where they work.
