ViewPoint: Job Corps is cooking!

May 29, 2008

The media are often accused of telling only the "bad" news when it comes to stories about schools and even some organizations.

Well listen up! We are sharing the "good" news about the Turner Job Corps Center.

Turner Job Corps Center is moving toward its goal of becoming one of the top third performing centers in the nation. Compared to the top six centers in the nation, Turner is now ranked #2.

Under the new administration, led by Center Director Steven Belk, Turner has improved its numerical rating, community reputation and overall outcomes.

There are 930 students at Turner and those students have been extremely active in projects to enhance the S.W. Georgia community.

Did you know the students built the lockers in the Albany Civic Center, currently being used by the Wildcats?

Did you know the students in the Asphalt Paving trade were responsible for paving the road at the Honey Pot stable in order to make it more wheelchair accessible?

Did you know the Job corps students donated more than $1,000 to help build Turtle Park?

And did you know the Turner students have regularly volunteered to work with the Keep Albany Beautiful "Stash the Trash" Campaign?

Even though these centers are all different and each has its own unique challenges, barriers and strengths, Turner Job Corps has exceeded its goals and is moving ahead in its efforts to train, graduate, and place students in careers that will make them productive and responsible citizens.

Now that's good news!
