Cairo-- Most Grady countians were asleep when a tornado hit early Monday morning. The county's emergency phone alert system, Code Red was not activated and a lot of people said they were unaware bad weather was headed their way.
The emergency management agency director, Jim Ellis says the system wasn't activated because it's is new and hadn't yet been initialized. "We had done it in a test market with a small number of calls and it had worked fine. But we had not tried it on the major population," says Ellis.
Thursday night they ran their first full test of all 800 numbers in the system. They say it went well and in the future it will be activated during a watch or a warning.
