Lightning is a serious danger, but you can protect yourself. The National Weather Service suggests starting with awareness. Keep your eyes and ears open on warm, sunny days.
If you can hear thunder from a storm, chances are you are in striking distance of lightning, and should take shelter immediately. And if you see lightning count the time until you hear thunder. If that time is 30 seconds or less, the storm is close enough to be deadly.
If you are inside during a storm, stay away from windows and doors and avoid contact with anything that conducts electricity. It's a good idea to go over storm safety tips with your family now, well before the peak of thunderstorm season.
And remember, you don't have to be in the direct path of lightning to be struck, so protect yourself before the storm gets close... ensuring that this summer will be a safe one.
The National Weather Service estimates that there will be 25 million lightning flashes just this year.
