Final goodbye in Richland to tornado victim

March 10, 2007

Richland -- Several people were in Richland to bid a final farewell to a woman killed in Americus during the tornadoes.

Friends and family remember Carrie Willis Gaines as a friendly and kind woman. She grew up in Richland, and attended Stewart County schools, but later moved to Americus.

She worked at Fort Benning for many years as a dining attendant, and was active in many southwest Georgia organizations.

Her loved ones say she will be missed.

"She was the type of person that kept you up. She was very happy. She always let people know how she felt about them. If she loved you, she would tell you," said cousin Brenda Jones.

Gaines' funeral took place at New Saint Mark Missionary Baptist Church in Richland. She was buried in Preston, Georgia.

She leaves behind many family and friends in both Georgia and Connecticut.
