Outside volunteers help Sumter recovery

March 7, 2007

Americus  --  Countless volunteers have poured into Americus and Sumter County to help with the clean up and nearly a week later many continue to help.

Samaritans' Purse, Disaster Relief Agency out of Virginia had a team of volunteers that arrived Saturday to help with the clean up.  Teams of college students with Habitat for Humanity have also descended on Americus from Northeastern University, University of Connecticut, University of Virginia, and the University of Toledo to lend a hand.

"Cutting trees off of homes, getting trees out of yards, and tarping holes in roofs, patching holes in roves so they can hook the power back up," says Tommy Smith of Samaritans' Purse.

"When something like this happens, obviously you have to drop what you are doing and help where the need is the greatest, it's overwhelming, it's rewarding knowing that we can help and at the same time you feel a great sense of loss for the families," says Logan Sheehan of the University of Toledo.

Both Samaritans' Purse and Habitat for Humanity will have volunteers in Americus until Saturday, when a new group of volunteers will arrive to continue the work.
