Americus -- Disposing of debris in Sumter County is no easy task. Sumter County administrators are pleading with residents to limit what they're putting on the curb to be hauled away.
City and County public works crews have been working non-stop to remove tree and home debris left over from Thursday's tornado. Sixty trucks arrive every hour at one of two dump sites for debris. Green debris stretches the entire length of a football field and is piled a story high.
Right now, Sumter County leaders are asking residents to limit the debris to only what's necessary. "Please only move that debris right now that is essential to be removed to secure the homes and entrance to the property," asked Sumter County Administrator Lynn Taylor.
Because of the Federal Disaster Declaration in Sumter County, the debris removal will be paid for by the federal government and eventually contractors will be named to handle the task.
