Americus -- Nine south Georgians lost their lives when several tornados devastated nine counties Thursday night. Wednesday, a second man was laid to rest, the first of two victims in Americus.
Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity brothers gathered for a prayer at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Americus as they paid their final respects to 43-year-old Jerry Dukes. Dukes was crushed by a concrete wall in friend Travis Griffin's duplex. Griffin survived, but his neighbor Carrie Willis Gaines was also killed.
Wednesday, family members remembered Dukes, a Georgia Southwestern State University basketball standout, as a caring man.
"I want people to remember my uncle Jerry for the good times that he had. Jerry was a good, giving, and caring person, I'd never seen him upset he was always happy and that's how I want him to be remembered," said Dukes' nephew, Jeffery Wakefield.
Forty-eight year old Wallace Culverhouse was the first victim to be buried Saturday. Culverhouse died in his mobile home in Taylor County. Six others were killed in mobile homes in Baker County.
