Those jobless from tornado get help

March 6, 2007

Americus  --  More than a thousand Sumter County workers are believed to have lost their jobs as a result of Thursday's storms, and now assistance is available.

The State's Labor Department has opened a Disaster Unemployment Assistance Center on the campus of South Georgia Technical College.  Inside the Griffin Bell Aerospace Technology Center affected Sumter County residents can apply for unemployment compensation.

"They will be eligible to receive assistance for up to 26 weeks and the amount will be determined based on how much they were earning prior to the job loss," said State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond.

Because of the Presidential declaration, employers will not be charged for the unemployment compensation and small business owners are also eligible to apply.  The center will be open through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. A shuttle will run on the hour from the Labor Department on East Church Street out to the center at South Georgia Technical College.
