What is menopause? How can the symptoms be treated?

Menopause is defined as the permanent cessation of menstruation for a period of greater than 12 months.  Natural menopause occurs when the ovaries stop producing estrogen.  The average age of menopause in the U.S. is 51.  Surgical menopause occurs when the ovaries are removed, often at the time of a hysterectomy.  When your ovaries are removed, menopause occurs immediately.
