Lee County-- It seems one of the nation's fastest growing counties is on the right track when it comes to economic development but there's still work to do.
Record residential growth continues in Lee County and commercial development is picking up. Over the last two years the number of building permits doubled from 600 to more than 1,200.
But Lee County Development Authority Director Winston Oxford says according to the J.W. Fanning Institute UGA's ideal tax base mix, Lee County's numbers don't match up.
The county is over when it comes to residential and well under when it comes to commercial and industrial development.
"It shows that we're on the right path recruiting commercial investment. We think we stand a better chance of succeeding in the commercial investment arena moreso than the industrial," said Oxford.
Right now Lee County's income percentage derived from its tax base is 59% residential, 13% commercial and .009% industrial.
Oxford says the economic outlook looks good though. Oakland Meadows with its three industries bought in about $300,000.
He hopes to announce more commercial developments soon. One could be the construction of an IHOP on Ledo Road. He says if all goes well, construction could begin by June or July.
